COLEMAN HISTORY

  • 1899 - W.C. Coleman first encountered the lamp that would change the course of his life. Coleman was stopped in his tracks by the brilliant white light of the Efficient Lamp, a hanging lamp owned by the Irby-Gilliland Company; and Coleman enthusiastically signed on as a salesman with the company.

  • 1900 - W.C. Coleman set out to sell the Efficient Lamps in Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory.

  • 1901 - Coleman purchased the inventory and patents for the lamp and relocated to Wichita, Kan.

  • 1905 - Coleman began manufacturing operations in Wichita, producing hollow-wire lighting systems.

  • 1909 - The Coleman Lamp Company introduced a portable lamp that became a staple in rural homes.

  • 1914 - The young Company introduced the Coleman® Arc Lantern, the lantern that made it famous. At 300 candlepower, it could light the far corners of a barn and provide good light in every direction for 100 yards. It made a significant impact on the country as the first outdoor all-weather gasoline lantern.

  • 1915 - The U.S. government declared the Coleman® Arc Lantern an "essential item" of World War I. More than 70,000 of the lanterns were distributed across the nation, allowing farmers and workers to extend their hours and produce items critical to the war effort.

  • 1916 - The company offered its first match-light lantern - the Quick Lite™ Lantern - eliminating the need to ignite a bit of felt, dipped in wood alcohol, and hold it against the generator in order to vaporize the fuel.

  • 1923 - The Coleman® Camp Stove was introduced as Americans took to the road for vacations.

  • 1940s - The Coleman "GI" Pocket stoves were developed and more than a million sold to the U.S. military. During WWII, "Coleman," in response to the password, "Lantern," identified an American G.I.

  • 1954 - Coleman introduced galvanized steel coolers.

  • 1955 - Coleman introduced its first butane lantern.

  • 1957 - Coleman patented a tool to make plastic liners for coolers and jugs.

  • 1965 - Coleman began marketing tents and sleeping bags.

  • 1974 - Coleman introduced its first propane lanterns.

  • 1986 - Coleman introduced battery-powered lights.

  • 1989 - Coleman introduced unleaded fuel-burning stoves and lanterns.

  • 1995 - Fifty millionth lantern rolled off the line.

  • 1996 - Coleman introduces the NorthStar® Lantern, 20 percent greater light output than Coleman's previously brightest Lantern and perhaps the most user-friendly liquid fuel lantern ever produced.

  • 2001 - The Coleman Company, Inc., celebrated its centennial with a 1,200-pound "Smore's," which set a world record at that time.

  • 2002 - The Company surpasses the 60-million mark in its fuel lantern production. Coleman engineers burning appliance and manufactures torch for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

  • 2004 - Coleman celebrated 50 years of cooler production, totaling 150 million coolers.

  • 2001 to 2004 - Coleman has introduced important new products and technologies, including: Coleman® Perfectemp™ Catalytic Heaters; Patio Heater and Light; Mosquito Deleto™ systems; RoadTrip® Grill; Camping Coffeemaker; Exponent F1 stoves; Side Solutions and PowerBurner for Coleman® Grills; Hot Water on Demand™ Portable Water Heater; RoadTrip® Powerchill™ Thermoelectric Cooler; Stainless Steel Party Cooler; QuickBed® Comfort Control™ with Airtight® systems; Pillow Top Airbed; Inflate-All® Quickpump™; Weathermaster® Tent; Zipplow™ Technology to prevent zipper snags; WeatherTec™ System "Keeps You Dry Guaranteed" on Coleman Tents; Wrap 'N' Roll™ Technology; Water Recreation Inflatables; Car Top Cargo boxes; Ultimate™ Xtreme® six- and seven-day coolers; Rechargeable Table Lamp; Coleman® Widebeam™ Technology flashlights; Retro Battery Lantern; reintroduced the legendary Coleman® Steel Belted® Cooler; and much more.

  • 2005 - Coleman was purchased by Jarden Corporation. Jarden Corporation is a growth company whose forte is brand, product innovation and market leadership.
